In an enriching encounter, Assemblywoman Karines Reyes of the New York State Assembly, who identifies herself as Afro-Latina, met with Garifuna leaders from the Bronx, NY at Casa Yurumein. This dialogue was marked by a welcoming and positive atmosphere, where the challenges facing the Garifuna community were addressed and solutions were proposed.

The active participation of several Garifuna leaders in this meeting was fundamental to identify and discuss the problems affecting their community. From housing issues to access to basic services and educational opportunities, a variety of concerns were raised that deserve attention and action.

Highlighting the commitment of Assemblywoman Karines Reyes as the Garifuna community's champion before the assembly for the time being, this meeting represented a first step towards recognition and political action for the benefit of the community. More champions and advocates for Garifuna rights are expected to join in the near future, expanding support and representation in governmental bodies.
